What is Betay Lakay:

 

Betay (meaning farm animals) is a grassroots organization with the mission to help improve animal farming in Haiti (Lakay). Betay Lakay is working hand in hand with the farmers to help them achieve utmost potential from their livestock. We combine 21st century techniques with the farmers' innate ability for maximum results while keeping the animals fresh and organic. To us, organic production practices are the only option for livestock producers to grow and market quality animals while producing healthy meat-products that will not cause diseases or interfere with humans' natural growth process. So regardless of the challenges, and there many, the rewards to organic livestock management practices are simply too important to ignore.

 

This said, every animal grown or sold by us were produced under a strict organic management system. Meaning, they had their total ration that was comprised of agricultural products including pasture, forage, and crops that were organically produced and handled organically. It also means our organic livestock have living conditions that accommodate natural behaviors and health of the animals. The living conditions include access to outdoors, shade, shelter, fresh air, direct sunlight suitable for each species and access to pasture for ruminants. We never administer hormones or other drugs for growth promotion; we simply allow nature to run its course.
